While she isn't in a wheelchair, this sounds strangely similar to something my grandfather (a WW2 vet who helped liberate France) did to my grandmother. She walked up behind him and said something and he immediately went into "kill mode" thinking a German had crept up behind him. He choked her. I am unsure of how it was broken up but I do know it was very traumatic for her as well. War is a terrible thing.
