They aren't "collectively intelligent" on the species level so much as they are on the colony level. Read up on eusociality in insects:

The evolution of eusociality is an interesting topic, and naked mole rats are a particularly weird example of this (they're the only known mammalian species that exhibits it).

It's not wired directly to the brain anymore if you sever it. PT cannot heal all SCIs or else there'd be no paraplegics out there.
