This is totally a shot in the dark, but I imagine a super clean house, and a lot of light would go far to keep spiders away. Without a food supply of pests, they don't have a reason to stay. And it seems many species of spiders like to nest in dark corners.

Source: My parent's house is dark and pretty filthy. Every time I visit it's like clearing a dungeon in Elder Scrolls.
