How do I get into AI?

I’m a cloud engineer without a lot of programming experience and no hands on machine learning experience.

I spend so much time daydreaming about the idea of artificial general intelligence and I’ve come to believe its the thing I’d want to do if I could pick anything imaginable…but I’m not sure I’m smart enough to get into such a difficult, bleeding edge area.

What would you say about my situation?
