You won't see many people there talking about boots. For good reasons.
Trail runners are so much more comfortable, and you really feel the weight difference when making long ascents. One of my most memorable hikes was a 5000 foot ascent. The first time I did it in boots and it was quite a struggle and I felt it for days afterwards. Then I did it in trail running shoes and my feet felt so much lighter it was like they'd spring up on their own, did it in less than 2/3 the time, and I felt great the next day. These shoes usually have great ventilation that helps prevent blisters.
There's also the issue of finding a place to get your boots resoled while on a 3000 mile hike in the backcountry. With trail running shoes, you can order shoes on your phone and have them shipped to an upcoming trail town, although the most popular shoes are getting stocked in more and more places.
Walking around NYC, you might literally only have to walk a few blocks to find someone to resole your boots. You can also go to the same place every time.
Personally, I'd be happy to pay extra to walk around the city in cushy sneakers instead of boots. I try to limit wearing boots to work and motorcycle.

Thanks for being honest. It's disappointing to hear that treatment is lacking for a class of inmates where treatment would be most beneficial.
