My grandmother, did, in fact, line up for bread rations during the Great Depression, you know, when our glorious markets collapsed?

Agree here. My wife is from China and her whole family is there. They are, indeed, aware and ashamed of many aspects of that time. However, her grandmother, who lived through it, was happy for the macro-level changes that were initiated through Maos policies. Literally everyone there is aware that it wasn't a smooth transformation but one that had to happen, nonetheless and they were ultimately (key word) better off for it.

The communist party and life over there is far from perfect but they have accomplished a hell of a lot for their country in a short period of time and her parents love it there. We make a lot of the censorship and other big differences between the political climate here and there but, honestly it doesn't affect their day to day lives.

It is my hope that as they develop, they can rectify some of the lingering problems.
