Not an eye doctor, but I went to the eye doctor this week with the same problem. He said that the pharmacy reading glasses would be fine for people with normal vision or with people who wear contacts for distance vision.

Also said that it's perfectly normal for a person to suddenly need reading glasses between ages 40 and 43.

He did mention that a prescription with the wrong strength can cause bad effects on your eyes. I changed glasses specifically because I can't read with my old ones. He told me that the reason I can't read with my old one is that they over-correct my distance vision, making my close up vision much worse than they should be.

If you're playing a piece and there's a long (dozens of measures long) period where you're not playing, how do you keep track of when you come in? E.g., do you count every measure or do you know that you come in when the violins play a certain melody?
