In the event of a zombie apocalypse, how long would it take for our water to go to shit?

What is a lesson learned you would share with someone who aspires to design a website? If I have an idea for a website, a fairly sophisticated one, would you recommend me, who has never built a website, to take a stab at it, or just hire a developer? My extent of computer science is lesson 3 of intro to CS on udacity.
