I don't know about the hostel specifically, but I used to live in Pittsburgh and it's a very safe city if you are a woman traveling solo. Go visit!

Pittsburgh also has some phenomenal museums- the Carnegie museums for more traditional art and natural history and the Warhol for contemporary art. The Phipps Conservatory if you want to pretend you're in a jungle. The zoo is substantial. Oh man now I'm starting to miss Pittsburgh.
