Was your characterization of Craig Schwartz in Being John Malkovich in any way influenced by David Foster Wallace? Comparing your character in that movie with his early interviews, some of the resemblances are uncanny.

Holding a balance isn't always a bad thing as long as you're responsible about it. It's a quick and easy way to get a short term loan for a few thousand dollars. Worked out great when I was about to graduate college and had a job offer that was still a couple months away from starting, but still had to cover moving expenses.

Credit card debt is a shitty thing that ruins a lot of people, but it is very possible to carry debt in the short term and not face any risk. You just have to be careful about it.
