It's common here, trust me :-). Nothing to do with mathematical genius but the kind of university entrance exams we have to prepare for. That said, I am sure that professor was good. Was he an ISI graduate by any chance - those are best stat colleges in India?
Yes, I frequent China, Korea and Japan and I've seen it. In Korea it's amazing. They are self sufficient with their mother tongue and I respect them for this. They don't feel compelled to learn English or any other foreign language (unlike places my country India). But the result is, well, very poor English. It's changing with the newer generation though.
