Half my family is German and it was pretty much accepted common knowledge that surrendering to the USA was the best thing a German soldier could do. My great grandfather, an officer, deserted and marched his men across bombed out Germany just so they could surrender to the USA. They avoided the British because of rumours that the British army would send you to the Russians.
