I'd rather have someone with a "natural" knowledge of the political landscape from paying attention in relevant classes and keeping up on current events than someone studying out of a book, but that's just me.

Thanks, I have a degree in Neuroscience. I intentionally phrased it in a way so that I wouldn't end up having this argument because I think it ultimately ends up in the realm of philosophy. You have no way of proving that fish can't feel pain, although you seem to have a lot of confidence in that claim, and no one else can prove to you that fish can feel pain.

Also, something doesn't have to cause pain (in the neurological sense you're referring to) in order to be considered cruel.
