Popular perception now is that science has gone out the window and the Covid-19 response is being directed by the economy. How accurate is this perception?

My understanding is that it's all to do with nerves.

Stating the obvious to start with - nerve route the pain signals from the body to the brain.

You get yourself a deep cut? You're cutting right through the nerves so they can't send that signal. And it probably takes a little time for nearby nerves to kinda wake up and think "What? Something's not right. Oh jebus it's all kinda effed up over there."

So, I guess broken bones hurt more because the nerves in the skin around the bone are just dandy to send those pain signals along to the brain. But a propeller through the leg means the nerves are like people in '80s horror movies tapping away at a phone after the killer has severed the line.

It's also why papercuts hurt like a mofo. Not deep enough to sever any of the nerves, so 100% of the pain messages are hitting the brain right away (don't believe me, just watch any of the Jackass papercut clips).
