Not OP, but it’s short for Tarmacadam, a surfacing material made by combining crushed stone, sand, and tar, patented by Welsh inventor Edgar Purnell Hooley in 1902. It’s an example of genericization.

Thanks for the link! Really great read. They make one small error when discussing the Reaxx saw from Bosch; it actually made it to market! Many people bought this expensive saw before it was pulled when Bosch lost the lawsuit. Bosch can’t manufacture the replacement safety cartridges anymore, so the tools will eventually be “bricked” once it’s safety feature is triggered. Looking forward to 2021 when the patent expires.

In woodworking shops there are tools that will immediately stop the blade from moving if they contact skin. Does the insurance industry do anything to incentive purchasing this type of equipment for cabinet shops and similar operations?
