First, I want to say that living in Detroit is the first time I've felt the police were there for my protection, and not to make the city money. Thank you.

Secondly, as a Corktown resident, what are some things I absolutely should do to stay safe?

Well...

I said in my comment that I'm here. So that's me plus ~700 thousand others according to: http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/26/2622000.html

Granted, 7% of those are below 5 years old, and 11.5% are over 65, and we know those groups either don't commit crimes or can't pay the fines. That still leaves ~570500 (including me) people who could pay a parking ticket.

Detroit is still in the top 20 most populous US cities, but has such a poor PR problem that most people have no idea that it's got a thriving culture inside it, with several areas on the rise. Not all of them, as evidenced elsewhere in this AMA, but enough that I'm hopeful for the city I live in and love.

But what do I know, I live in a city where the only good press we've recently received has to do with Peter Weller.
