This might be a strange question that you might have addressed elsewhere but Why do this procedure? How is it beneficial compared with alternatives such as surrogates and even adoption, and accounting for the fact that these patients are, I am assuming, on life long immunosuppression?

Your argument is very fair. I was just wondering if the additional emotional benefit of the journey as you describe is worth the risk of a surgery which also requires you to take additional medication to prevent rejection. The risk benefit discussion is definitely interesting and I assume very dependent on the patient.
