Recent experiments just proved that the "observer" was not necessary to collapse the wave function, but simply to have a device interacting with said wave function. Saying that physicists favor the necessity of consciousness shows that your knowledge is, at best, outdated.

Just like with the idea of free will, it seems to me that you dismiss this idea only because you don't like what are their implications and because the science behind is complicated. That's not rational thinking, and it doesn't add anything to the discussion.

How often will you need to go to the garbage patch to clean the system from what it collected? How many/how big ships will you need each time? What will be the amount of plastic collected on each of these trips?

(Thanks for what you're trying to achieve, and thanks for the inspiration you provide)

What are the facts you base your skepticism on? Because just telling me you're skeptical doesn't provide me with any interesting information to study.

I would argue that human brains work the same way, we have different brain regions processing different things, we don't have one brain region doing everything. Why should we expect anything different for AI?

I don't see why we couldn't create a general intelligence pluging together different algorithms meant to do different things. It's not that far away and not fictional IMO.
