What was the general feeling about Jews amongst the villagers before and after the war?

Yes anti-semitism was a major problem back then, especially where a lot of Jews congregated, i.e., most of Eastern Europe (google the Pale Settlement). Of course that was a time when every type of racism and nationalism was a problem. It was just extra virulent against Jews because of the whole Christ killer thing, amongst a whole host of reasons.

Interestingly anti-semitism was much worse in Poland, Russia and Hungary than in Germany pre-WWII. In Germany it was an elitist thing really taking off in Wagner's time. In the east it was rural, heavily religious peasants that hated them. Lots of Poles and Hungarians were more than happy to see the Jews go during WWII.

I'm actually from Ukraine (but raised in the US practically from birth) and am half Russian and half Jewish. Really interesting to hear the perspective of older generations in my family.
