Rather naive question: but why is there a need for a 'dark web'? Most would think it's a resource to obtain something illegal.

Thank you for your answer. Although I do believe that there is some good that comes from the 'dark web', I'm not entirely convinced that it serves as a good thing overall. Are there any sources or mainstream media stories that indicate that this is something that should continue to exist?
