I think you're misunderstanding him. Even though it's something that has to be done, it's still not a fun experience.

When my brother died a police officer swung by my house to take me to the hospital where he was. He told me he'd been found by an apartment complex after jumping off the roof. He couldn't tell me any specifics, only that they were operating on him at the hospital.

Several weeks later I met one of the paramedics involved and he explained to us that my brother pretty much died on impact and there wasn't anything that could be done. The officer had to have known some of this. Put yourself in his shoes, imagine trying to comfort a crying 20-year old while you know you're taking him to a place where he's going to be told his younger sibling just died. I couldn't do it, it would kill me. By telling them, you're turning over their lives and probably shattering their hearts. Someone has to do it but by god it must suck to have to do it. Therefore I have nothing but respect for both the officer and OP.
