Another reason may be, in those two instances at least, they are not presidents but prime minister and chancellor, respectively. Meaning neither are directly elected by the people (I know I know, America has the Electoral College, but that's hardly analogous). So maybe that degree of attenuation also works to distance the average Canadian/German from identifying too closely with either? Just a thought, I don't have any data to back it up.

Is it more common for interpreters of your skill level to work for private or governmental employers? And are those two fields very similar, or do interpreters tend to pick one and stick with it?
