They aren't. They operate under different principles and for different purposes, but ultimately when a union donates "x" amount of money it is typically to support someone they think will help them politically, the same is the case for a corporation. Unions in theory are supposed to represent and bring together the workers, whereas companies exist solely for profit. Their donations however both aim to voice their concerns and beliefs.
