Usually they match the skin of the user for the skin sleeve around it. I'm not 100% sure also, but i think it provides a level of weather proofing so they probably wouldn't let you go around with the bare metal under the shell 'terminator style'

Obviously not OP but if you're wondering about the mechanics, the myoelectric models use electrodes attached to existing muscles groups to control the grip. In his case it appears to be a forearm prosthetic and most likely opens or closes when he flexes different areas of the forearm. The flexing creates small electric pulses which are picked up by the electrodes and essentially function as buttons to open or close the hand.

some of the more expensive and higher priced ones have more electrodes mapped to rotation, grips, and even forearm movement if the actual forearm isn't there

I Agree but at the same time it's not as terminator looking as you might think. I think most models are just a white shell since they don't want anything messing with the internals. Now if THAT was transparent it'd be awesome

Hi OP, I'm planning on going into the bionic prosthetics field and love knowing about people's experience with their prosthetics so thanks for doing the AMA.

  1. How much did the arm cost and how did you decide on the model?

  2. Some people have said that they prefer the simpler body powered hook prosthetics because they believe the more advanced myoelectric arms can't function as well in 'dirtier' professions like farming where it's exposed to the elements. Have you had any issues with outdoor usage due to the weather?

  3. Usually the sensors for the myoelectric models are on the arm or torso. Where are yours and how long did it take you to get used to the new way of controlling your grip?

Edit: it appears to be a forearm model so that answers where the electrodes are located. I'd still like to know about usage of you don't mind

Thanks again OP

Although the operation was free, do you know how much the prosthetic would cost without the healthcare. Glad to hear it was no cost to you though as the prosthetics can run up to $30k if i remember right.
