Survivor's guilt is common but know this. It's extremely unlikely you could have taken him down without a firearm, I shoot quite a bit for fun/target practice so I know the abilities of firearms pretty well and I feel pretty confident saying you would have had a 99.9999% chance of getting shot to death. Wherever I've been that has a active shooter drill/policy the sentiment is the same, shelter in place or escape if possible. They don't tell you to attack the gunman because that gets you killed.

IMO trying to instill someone's ethnic culture on them is... instilling that they aren't a part of the natural group (classmates, family, community, etc.) Your son will grow up in the culture you live in and THAT is his culture/heritage.
