Having worked in a few kitchens, I've always felt the Dishwasher was a make or break position that deserved much more respect. Everything is clean and tidy or it's a fucking disaster! A good dishwasher is worth just as much as a good cook when you are slammed.

I just posted about taking my kids on these tours. What can I do to help the message really sink in, and help them understand?

When I was a non-parent, I thought the same thing. But what ended up happening is I realized that it was really difficult to teach -this- to blond white kids that might say something stupid to their friends or friends parents. She has friends of several different ethnicities, enough that she the eldest assumed her hair would turn black at some point. I wanted them to be able to understand that these were not pretend stories, that this was a real history. They don't watch TV, but while we were on vacation they found a tv and saw the protests in Ferguson, and understood that "they were being mean to the black people" and when the Baltimore protests started that was another instance they saw on the TV at a restaurant, so we are using that as a way to explain that this started with slavery, and our culture continues to treat black people very poorly. The other kids are a bit more empathic than my eldest and I think can learn about this earlier, so we aren't just teaching the one.
