A tidbit to add: Education is absolutely the key, and part of it includes talking about it in casual conversation. Especially now with The Shallows, if one person in a group of friends understands the issues with shark hunting, they can pay it forward by mentioning that sharks are killed way more than humans. You can say it without sounding like a total nerd, something like: "Sharks are dicks, yeah, but we're assholes for killing them, too."
