Id be interested in seeing where you got the emotional strength average from. Coming from a working class background and having grown up with traditionally manly men and who now works with the same types, something Ive learened is that the old style of masculinity encompasses emotional weakness.
Traditional men bottle up everything until it bursts out in anger. They avoid anything that might move them emotionally and they are terrified of looking weak. Its just all a product of insecurity. Real emotional strength comes from healthy expression and handling of your emotions, which is something that it shunned in that traditional image of masculinity.

I have a similar coping mechanism. I put myself 10/20 years in the future and ask myself if I'll care about this then. I screwed up at work and will get a mouthful from the boss. Will I care in 10 years? No. Hell, I will have forgotten about it come summer. So its nothing to get down about.
