New research indicates that in heart attacks, etc, people who receive chest compressions alone fare much better on average - apparently your blood is plenty oxygenated, at least for the first few minutes or so, and anything stopping or diverting energy away from chest compressions in those critical first few minutes is detrimental. Or so I've read.
Obviously it doesn't help in cases like OP's, I guess they still train lifeguards with both (I would hope!).
