It's really, really hard to do anti-spam without using a third party service unfortunately. Few blogs receive enough traffic to be able to "learn" what is spam on their own. Akismet allows everyone to work together to fight spam as a whole.

Automattic has hired over 70 people this year if I remember my stats correctly. The standing job openings are just because we always need more good developers and support folks. :)
