I'm a layman who took AP Psych, so don't take my word for it, but I believe that most but not all scientists think that it's unethical to give people a ton of money for participating in experiments.

The idea is that you're giving people a strong incentive to do crazy stuff that could cause harm to them, and that somehow it's not really voluntary since their opportunity cost is much lower, and they don't really want to do it. I think it's dumb, but most ethics boards disagree.
