Is dental deep cleaning a scam? I went to a new dentist, and asked for a cleaning. They refused to give me one, and said I needed a deep cleaning, and that I needed to wait for 6 weeks for my insurance to approve the procedure.

I didn't get a cleaning, and insurance refused what they wanted to give me. Stating the xrays showed no gum-disease.

Thanks. One more question, is it normal for a dentist to refuse to perform regular cleaning, if they recommend a deep cleaning? Even though my insurance rejected the deep cleaning, but will pay for a regular?

Or is this an extortionate tactic?

If I could get it if it was covered, but I can't afford the $980 to do it. I tell the office that, and they say too bad they won't give me the regular cleaning my insurance WILL pay for.

Seems like a great way to exacerbate my problem.

They refused a regular clean that would be covered, and offered me a payment plan.
