Depends on your prescription ultimately. But yeah, the dimming one is awful and just makes them go yellowish over time.

By dimming, do you mean photochromatic/transition lenses, or something else?

Does a PD value change? Mine was 62 in 2006~, and 65 when I had an eye test in 2013.
