1) complaints of theft or cleanliness are huge red flags
2) location. Some cheap hostels are cheap because you're 45 mins walk from anything interesting
3) Bathroom and shower situation. How many per floor? (stayed in a shit hostel in Amsterdam that had 1 shower and toilet per floor of 25+ people, and it was a goddamned nightmare

Get a CELTA certification and you can teach almost anywhere except western Europe.
I went to Russia because it was interesting to me. You can make good money in China, South Korea, or Vietnam

Eastern and Southern Europe should be your destination. Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland, Croatia, Spain, Portugal.
Cheaper hostels, cheaper transportation, beautiful architecture, better pubs.
If you're traveling on a budget, skip the UK, France, Germany, and Northern Europe, because those places will eat up your cash quickly.
I'm 38 and me and my wife still do hostels when the price is right.
