Is there any way for any of us to help A's mother (and the dog and cat)? I'm not sure if that would be appropriate in any way, or if they even want or need support where they are

Yup! The Book, The Gene: An Intimate History by Siddhartha Mukherjee goes into this. It's more of a history book of the study of genes/genetics/evolution than anything else. Good stuff.

I agree with you. I'm in my late 20s, and started learning about the Holocaust in school starting around grade 4 (when I was 9 or 10). The education on it never really stopped, so I've been raised in a world in world trying to be vigilant to make sure it doesn't happen again (because complacency/"It could never happen here" is a very easy way to start on the path to it).

Also, in regards to a Holocaust being repeated against Jewish people specifically, I don't think that will be happening any time soon. But the fact that US laws are being passed to target and discriminate against trans people is concerning. Because those are absolutely the baby steps to much worse things happening a year from now
