Yeah when I found out I could use any old 608 2RS bearing it was a happy day ... unfortunately the cheap ones come pre-greased for high rpm applications, which is a PITA to clean out and replace with thin oil :-/

Hi, just to partially answer your question about biggest bearings: coal and rock crushers use very large bearing-like mechanisms - I don't know if it counts, but I used to work for a company that made parts for them and the biggest ball I ever saw was in the region of 12' across, and required a special heavy semi to transport. Same company also made bulletproof in kits for limos and stuff :-)
