Here's an interesting way to look at it: Given that there are already gay Boy Scouts (who simply keep it secret), then there is good evidence that gay scouts do not pose any sort of problem. If gay scouts created problems, then we would already know about those problems, since there are already gay scouts.

The enforcement of the no-atheists rule is very inconsistent. As an atheist scout, I think that the National leadership is much more religiously-oriented than its constituent councils. Even though my local council is in the "Bible Belt," it takes a "don't care" opinion on religious beliefs.

I attended a National Jamboree shakedown at the Summit last summer, and there was a mandatory church service. Instead of attending the large service, my council had its own brief religious service and spent the rest of the time looking at a helicopter.

This example simply shows how the National leadership is out of touch with the userbase in that it is much more religiously-stringent. This can be extended to the issue of homosexuality instead of religion.
