FWIW if you're looking for ways to help out and also assist with the homelessness problem, check out my reply under the other question about it. The food pantries could really use some more volunteers right now :-)

And as a hoosier who also moved to the south I can 100% relate to your assessment about newcomers

Hey Mayor Pete!!! I don't have much a question, but as somebody who grew up in the area and has since moved away I just wanted to let you know how great a job I think you're doing! You and the improvements you're making are 2 of the biggest reasons I miss living in Michiana. Can't wait to see you on a bigger stage so I can cast my vote for you!

It is an AMA though so: I'm a woodworker and I've been wanting to make a little something to send up your way, any requests? The only wrong answer is "a pen" because I don't have a lathe lol

Not sure your position on the homeless situation, but for anybody looking to help out I have to mention that the local food pantries need younger/able bodied volunteers pretty badly right now. My mom works at one of them and at almost 60 years old she's one of the youngest there. She has rheumatoid arthritis but when my brother is unavailable to help she has to unload the deliveries basically by herself. It would be a great way to help out and really they don't need much time, just people who are able to carry/move boxes.

This is their website with the phone number listed. She said the best way to contact them is to leave a message at that number with your contact info and a good time for them to call you back since they don't really maintain normal business hours. I'm also happy to send you their e-mail if that's easier, just didn't want to post it here and have them get spammed. I just got off the phone with her a little bit ago and she mentioned they are also looking for drivers for food pickups/drop offs. I should note that the one she works at is hosted at a Methodist church, but is it's own entity.

There are other pantries in the area as well, she specifically mentioned United Way's "People Gotta Eat" campaign as another local example.
