When it comes to Faster Than Light Travel (FTL?) where are we at currently? What kind of resources would we have to put into exploring possibilities for FTL travel? What steps lead up to being able to test options?

I want to know some of the long-term issues with sending our human biology into space! I've heard about the potential that our gut bacteria might not be able to survive the radiation even though we might be able to. Are we going to have to breed a spacefaring version of humans to do long-term exploration and habitation?
