Aren't these flashbacks pretty rare? Like EXTREMELY rare. Did the police investigate whether there was some other motive for the crime (with flashback being used as an excuse by the perpetrator). E.g. there could have been a political component, sexual component, or some other motivation such as race, etc.

Given that you were blacked out after the assault, his words are the only evidence about what motivated the assault. He may have blamed a flashback for his actions, but its likely, given the political climate of the time, that that was done to avoid harsher sentencing or a more thorough investigation.
