Cause some people are idiots. I'm an EMT from the Pittsburgh area. A lot of the time when you hear about assaults by patients it's drug related. No one is ever in a good mood after being saved from opiate overdose. I almost got shot on a call because of a guy who overdosed, the medic on scene pushed narcan and the guy came around and decides to go get his gun. Now about family members I don't really know what to tell you. People are insane and they're jerks. Some people don't want medical attention and carry that over to their family with threats of violence. I responded to a call where a man needed to go to the hospital. His son came slammed on his breaks and almost crashed into us. Got out of the car and started flipping out saying his father wasn't going anywhere. He then proceeded to look at me and say, you big mother fucker, you'll be ther first mother fucker." People are just stupid sometimes. We're just doing our job and there are people out there willing to kill is for saving them. I wish we were allowed to carry weapons honestly. People like that respond to nothing but fear of return of force.

Thank you. It can be ridiculous but when you like to help people you gotta do what you gotta do.

The EMS gods as always Will make me suffer lol. Nope every time I have a psych pt they're usually not combative. I am absolutely not implying that things don't happen just because I've never personally had to deal with it. I've heard enough horror stories from calls and I'm thankful I haven't actually had to deal with anything that bad. Believe me I know that some seriously crazy stuff happens out there and I know a lot of people who have dealt with some crazy bs. I wasn't trying to imply anything and if my wording was confusing or for any reason I apologize. I merely meant I've been lucky when it comes to calls. Of course slowly I'm seeing more and more. I have a lot of respect for anyone in the medical field who's ever had to deal with the really gruesome stuff. I've only been an EMT for a little over a year so that may be some reasoning for my lack of experience with crazy calls.

That's why there are certain specific protocols for narcan push it slow to try not to give them too rude of an awakening. I've personally never had to deal with a combative psych pt. as if yet that is. I've had patients who were supposedly combative. One in particular who was recovering from a stroke would punch and kick the nurses but during transfer he was extremely well behaved and not at all combative. We had a nice conversation. Probably helped him stay calm.

Both of you bring up good points. I can feel their pain and I know their scared but that is only a worthy excuse for some people other people really are just messed up in the head. I understand their scared but they don't have to make us fearful for our own safety when were trying nothing more than to help them.. Maybe I'm just too green to understand. It's ok to be scared but when you start threatening violence it's gone too far. I mean pa just changed protocol to allow us to carry mace because of incidents and many of those came from my county.
