I was affected by the Baker Act multiple times between 2011-2014. A total of six times I believe for varying reasons. The first time was in middle school. I was feeling bad and wanted to jump off the third floor of my school building over a railing, hoping it would kill me. I told my assistant principal who I trusted at the time. She immediately called my mom and the police. We all sat in a conference room and the officer told my mom I’d have to go with him in the officers car, but my mom convinced him that she’d take me to the hospital, which she did, and I stayed at (what was at the time) Miami Children’s Hospital for 3 days I believe. From that one experience, it definitely made it harder to trust people, especially teachers and school staff. I was 12 years old, I confided in someone I trusted it, and it took me away from my parents and my friends and stuck me in a hospital for 3 days. Every other Baker Act after that was for breakdowns I had in the middle of class or times when I was found self harming. I felt like I couldn’t tell anyone what was going on because I was just gonna end up in a hospital again. In one way, it may have saved my life, in another way, it definitely made my life very difficult and lonely.
