Yes, you can change the battery without worrying about erasing the recording. That being said, it's tough to pop open the Build a Sound and change the battery without completely destroying the casing. And, if you accidentally hit the 'Record' Button in the Build a Sound, it will completely erase it for good.

I suggest what /u/tmishkoor said, which is try and re-record it first. You can bring it into a BABW and they can record another from the old one. You could also use a voice recorder app on your phone for the same effect. DEFINITELY DO THIS JUST TO HAVE A BACK UP EITHER WAY.
