Real life isn't call of duty.
If you are ambushed you have been taken by surprise. The immediate action is to get out of the kill zone and the patrol leader ideally indicates which way. If the gunmen are close you rush, if not you take nearest cover. Key point, your not trying to kill everyone, your trying to get away and survive.
You are talking about an advance to contact type scenario, where the lead grouping suppresses the enemy while the other groupings flanks.
Either way, it's not something you would expect civilians to do

it wouldn't be good if you lose your liscence and go to jail because you have a 25% to fail that test just because
