RTS titles like C&C aren't as popular for several reasons. One being the rise of shitware like Clash of Clans with a similar style (command an army, collect resources) but with the F2P nonsense added in. People see that top-down view in screenshots of any traditional RTS and probably assume it's just like a prettier version of Clash of Clans.

The other reason is that we kind of did everything with RTS games already. Until they find a way to create truly intelligent AI for units or perhaps blend the command portion of the RTS with first person shooting for the units themselves, there really isn't much else to do in the genre aside from creating new scenarios in the rock/paper/scissors battles that get carried out.

I'd love to see something like Planetside 2 mixed with an RTS function for commanders, personally. Allow the traditional RTS gameplay but with some units being taken over by actual players who view the game in first-person and can choose to follow orders for additional credits/xp but also have the ability to implement their own strategies for carrying out the orders they're given. That's where the genre should head, IMO.

I imagine the public stigma is another reason. German Shepherds tend to look more aggressive both in stance and facial structure than Labs and Goldens, and people associate them with being guard/police dogs capable of killing someone. Labs and Goldens are pretty much universally loved and trusted.
