I mean would Bob disagree? I feel-- based on nothing-- that Bob might consider any representation a deception, and maybe that's why he basically refuses to play songs live as they are represented on the album, instead re-inventing them (though I must admit when I saw him live "All Along the Watchtower" was performed very similarly to Hendrix's version, and "Mr. Jones" sounded very recognizable. "Desolation row" and others though were significantly re-imagined.) To remind people that they are being deceived, and that this is the service he is providing. A young Dylan might have believed in the capacity of music to affect change and therefore in the ability of music to represent something authentic and unchanging, but I think the modern era might have put Dylan in a different mindset. If there is an authenticity that informs his never-ending tour, I think it is the authenticity of the ephemera, the act of creative subduction that keeps expression moving, and in fact necessary.
Edit: My opinion might be confusing, but I feel like it's pretty well summed up by this Tool lyric (forgive me): "All you know about me is what I sold you, ..., I sold out long before you heard of my name, ..., I sold my soul to make a record, and you bought one"
At the risk of sounding needy, I would really like to hear if anybody disagrees!
