I recently finished reading A History of God by Karen Armstrong (great read, I recommend it), so I'll try to explain this as much as I understand it. The God of the Old Testament was still transitioning from being one of a myriad of gods into being the "One God". Initially Yahweh (or El) was one of many gods and his followers were worshipping him primarily, but still acknowledged the existence of others. This is what causes some of the favoritism of his followers. Yahweh was also a god of war, so his aggressive nature was a given to original followers. Devotion to one god at this time was not so much a belief that it was the "true" god, or that they were any better than other people; it was more about the result they got. Yahweh slowly started to take over roles that other gods once served in his progression to becoming the "One God".

The God of the New Testament was recorded by the followers of Christianity, which originally started as a part of Judaism but once people claimed Jesus was God, not just a prophet, the start of a new religion happened. Jesus was very much a man of the people, so he preached a religion that applied to everyone and anyone, not neccesarily the "chosen" people. This God is not responsible for a Tribe of people but is seen as the Supreme Being. By this time God dealing directly in earthly matters was not common (in mythology, as in the Old Testament).

I probably butchered parts of this as it's a huge subject but maybe you get the gist. Anyone feel free to correct anything I got wrong.

What were your parents religious backgrounds before joining? I've always been somewhat interested in Hinduism and the Krishna stuff.
