I have a friend with a progressive disability, and when she started using a cane to walk, strangers on the sidewalk started being SUPER nice to her--waving, saying hi, pretty much acting like they knew her. We lived in the Midwest so this wasn't that unusual, but as soon as she became 'visibly' disabled the number of people saying hi went way up (and they'd completely ignore me standing next to her, which was kind of funny). She's introverted and was pretty uncomfortable that she couldn't just walk down the street without being forced into conversation with five different people. Just don't be different than you would be with anyone else.
