The gender differences disappear in countries with lower incomes. In India, women make up at least 30% of the programming workforce. Educated women in India have a narrower set of opportunities, so they stick with the high-demand, high-paying tech sector.

In the US, women can pursue other fields, and still make a good enough living that they don't feel compelled to pursue what in all honesty is week upon week of tedious frustrating drudgery interrupted occasionally by moments of numinous epiphany. Programming is not an enjoyable field, by and large, and men pursue it because it pays well, and because men take a certain grim delight in putting up with unpleasant but profitable pursuits.

TL:DR; Women don't code because the first year of effort sucks and it gets worse from there except for the paychecks.

Hi Seth,

I loved the opening song you did for Futurama's Into the Wild Green Yonder (That was then and this is too). Did you collaborate with the Futurama team on lyrics and music, or did they have the whole arrangement ready to go?

Thanks!
