I always find it funny when people talk about the tank / DPS / healer trinity in MMOs.

At least when I played EQ, the "holy trinity" was tank / healer / CC. DPS ousting CC didn't happen until WoW (which I acknowledge is, at this point, probably more relevant).

I guess what I'm saying is "the holy trinity has mutated before, so it absolutely can do so again."

I've never said I'm an actor. Does this mean I'm not included with "everyone"?

I got my BA in English a few years ago, and I am under the impression that science fiction is developing a reputation for "pretty important literary work." Of course, it was mostly the classical stuff from decades ago and not much recent stuff.

I'll confess that I'm biased against fantasy novels, though. It's probably just from a personal failing and not knowing the genre well enough to seek out the good stuff. Gibson's predictions about the effects of Cyberspace seem so much more relevant than, say, Salvatore writing about a purple ponce stabbing burly green guys again.

Eh, a good puller counts as CC and if you only had to deal with 1 mob at a time you were golden without any dps. I mean, once you got that trinity locked down it could function unshakably but it'd also be slow going until it got some more people added to the group.

Later expansions started to change that, for sure, but by then WoW had already mutated the paradigm so they don't count. Only iffy case was LDoN where the time limit could screw you over if you chugged along slowly, but a lot of people consider it a different game by then.

Puller counts as CC.

And that's in later EQ. I know, I played from Luclin to... SoT? The Terris one was new and I never really got into it and permaquit shortly after that.

Anyway, way back, the mobs would definitely die without that much of an issue if you had a full party. But nobody could play anywhere remotely challenging without a warrior (or overgeared / twinked SK or Pally), cleric, and enchanter. They fixed this later on (thank goodness!) but for a long, long time dps was an afterthought.
